Apparently, We Own a Forest Now
Once we started dealing with the trees, it became pretty obvious that we weren’t talking about a few trees that needed trimming.
We had a LOT of trees and a lot of them needed to come down.
Many were dead or dying, some had been damaged or overwhelmed by ivy, and others had simply been allowed to get much too big. After twelve years without proper attention, there was no shortage of work to do.
So we started getting estimates.
The tree work was coming in somewhere between $9,500 and $13,000, depending on what needed to be done. And when you’re already staring at a $36,000 roof bill, another five-figure expense isn’t exactly exciting.
But these weren’t trees we could just ignore. Some were a safety concern, and removing them would also open up the property so we could finally see what we were working with.

And suddenly there were trees everywhere.
Well, technically they were on the ground, but you know what I mean. 😂
We ended up with huge piles of branches, logs, brush and a truly ridiculous amount of wood chips. The property looked even more chaotic before it started looking better.
But once the trees were down, we could finally see the property again. Areas that had been dark and overgrown opened up, and we could start thinking about what we actually wanted to do with the space.
There’s still plenty to figure out, especially with the slope and erosion control, but now we’re making plans instead of just dealing with the mess we inherited.
Apparently we didn’t just come home to a house that needed some work.
We came home to a forest. 🌲😂
