Apparently, I’m a Multipreneur

I’ve never been particularly good at doing just one thing.

Give me an idea, and there’s a pretty good chance I’ll want to figure out how to do it myself.

Over the years, I’ve taught myself all kinds of things. Computer graphics. HTML. Graphic design. Making T-shirts. Making cards. Soap. Skincare products. Cooking. Gardening. Photography. And probably several other things I’ve forgotten about.

Some of those interests turned into businesses. Some turned into hobbies. Some lasted a few months before something else caught my attention. Others have held my attention for years.

That’s just how my brain works.

I don’t really understand the concept of picking one thing and sticking with it forever. There are simply too many interesting things to learn.

APPARENTLY I LIKE FIGURING THINGS OUT

One of the things I’ve always enjoyed most is taking something I don’t know how to do and figuring it out.

I taught myself HTML because I wanted to build websites.

I learned graphic design because I wanted to create things that looked the way I imagined them.

I learned to make soap because I thought $5–$8 for a bar was ridiculous.

I learned to make other things because, well… I wanted to.

And somewhere along the way, I realized that learning the skill was often just as much fun as actually using it.

THEN I WENT BACK TO SCHOOL

Of course, I eventually decided to make things even more complicated.

I had dropped out of high school, but in my 40s I went back to school and earned a bachelor’s degree in IT from DeVry, followed by an MBA from Capella.

Because apparently learning things on my own wasn’t enough. I needed credentials, too. 😂

That education eventually led me into teaching, graphic design and entrepreneurship, but the underlying thing never really changed.

I still wanted to know how things worked.

I still wanted to make things.

And I still wanted to try the next thing that caught my attention.

I DON’T THINK I’LL EVER OUTGROW THAT

These days, I’m officially retired, although I’m not entirely sure retirement means what I thought it meant.

I’m renovating a neglected house, designing a garden, making cards and T-shirts, experimenting with homemade things, exploring the Oregon Coast, making YouTube videos and raising two kittens who seem determined to supervise everything I do.

And I’m sure there will be something else tomorrow.

There usually is.

I’ve never really been a one-thing person.

I’m a graphic designer who became a teacher who became an entrepreneur who became a gardener who makes soap, cards and T-shirts and videos and whatever else sounds interesting.

Apparently, I’m a multipreneur.

And honestly?

I’m pretty okay with that. 💜
