Four Binders of T-Shirt Designs Later
I Started Making Cards
Once I had four—yes, FOUR—binders full of T-shirt designs, I started looking for another way to put all those ideas to use.
That’s when I started making cards.
It turned out that a lot of the things that made a good T-shirt design also made a pretty good greeting card. I could take a funny saying, add some graphics, play around with papers and embellishments, and end up with something completely different.
And I really enjoyed it.
My cards are mostly sarcastic, sometimes a little risqué, and always meant to be fun. Some are sweet. Some are snarky. Some are the kind of card you buy because it reminds you so much of someone that you immediately know exactly who you’re giving it to.
They’re also handmade.
I design them myself, choose the papers and embellishments, and put each one together by hand. I like that part of the process because it means the finished card feels more personal than something that came off a printing press by the thousands.
Making cards also gave me an excuse to use some of the other creative skills I’ve picked up over the years. Design, typography, color, illustration, paper, photography, and a little bit of whatever happens to catch my attention that day.
Eventually, the cards became part of what I sold at craft markets alongside the T-shirts and other things I’d made.
And, naturally, once I started making cards, I found plenty of other things I wanted to try.
Apparently, four binders of T-shirt designs weren’t nearly enough. 😂
