Apparently, I’m Going to Volunteer With Whales

When I moved back to the Oregon Coast, I knew I wanted to explore more of the place I’d come home to. I just didn’t expect that exploration to involve whales.

I signed up to volunteer at the Whale, Sea Life & Shark Museum in Depoe Bay, Oregon, and honestly, I wasn’t entirely sure what I was getting myself into.

I’ll be volunteering alongside marine biologist Carrie Newell, founder of Whale Research Eco Excursions. The volunteer work will mostly involve customer service duties, but will also include getting out on the water, watching and learning about whales from a Zodiac.

A Zodiac!

I’m still wrapping my head around that one. 😂

Somewhere between dealing with twelve years of neglect at home, rebuilding the house and trying to create an entirely new garden, I apparently decided I needed to add “whale volunteer” to the list.

Because why not?

I don’t know exactly where this is going yet, but that’s part of what makes it interesting. I came home to Oregon wanting to explore, and suddenly I’m getting an opportunity to see this place—and its wildlife—from a completely different perspective.

This is the beginning.

Whether it was a good idea or not, we’ll find out. 🐋💜
